BRECHTEL PARK LAGOON REHABILITATION
BRECHTEL PARK LAGOON REHABILITATION
After completing the Brechtel Park Master Plan in 2012, DBA was selected by the City of New Orleans for the lagoon rehabilitation which calls for improving the lagoon hydrology and ecology. The majority of the work involved dredging the bottom of the lagoon and removing muck, which has settled along the bottom. Re-establishing a regular flow of the water was also a priority in order to restore healthy oxygen levels to the lagoon system. By doing so, the ability of the system to operate as wildlife habitat for the thriving local and migratory bird populations, reptile and fish species, and native aquatic flora will be restored. These goals were achieved by identifying key portions of the lagoon that inhibited flow and reshaping them by: widening a deepening of narrow channels, rounding edges of peninsulas, and smoothing parts of the lagoon bank.
