URBAN WATER MANAGEMENT EDUCATIONAL VIDEO

URBAN WATER MANAGEMENT EDUCATIONAL VIDEO

Dana Brown & Associates developed an animated video to help the local leaders and the public understand the problems and solutions for managing stormwater in the New Orleans region. The traditional approach is to drain water away from all areas and convey it to the storm sewer as fast as possible, which causes many problems of which most people are unaware. The video highlights localized flooding issues as well as subsidence and related damage caused by failure to recharge the groundwater, and pollutant loads in stormwater runoff that affects the water-based economy and recreation. The benefits of green infrastructure, including temporarily detaining stormwater, facilitating groundwater infiltration, and the filtration through soils and vegetation, are illustrated in the video using animation. Emphasis is placed on both water quantity and quality, and the surprising cost benefits of implementation.
